Title â€Å" As I am now, I am no wife for you†(Ibsen 887) This statement is from Henrik Ibsen’s play, A Doll House, is a play based in 1879, and it sets the tone of the remainder of the story. Ibsen seems to be making a statement that women need to mature and be independent before they have a family of their own. All of the women in this play leave their loved ones behind to gain their independence. Ibsen’s statement and character portrayal helps make Ibsen’s play take on feminist characteristics. Ibsen’s play shows that women must mature and be independent before they are ready to have a family. This is exemplified through Nora, minor characters such as Krogstad’s wife and the Nurse, and Christine. With this being one of the major themes†¦show more content†¦This quote helps Ibsen make statement that women need to be mature and independent before having a family of their own. Nora, ultimately, ends up packing her bags and leaving her loved ones behind to become her own independent woman. Nora states, â€Å" I can no longer content myself with what people say, or with what is found in books. I must think over things for myself and get to understand them†(885). Nora leaving her family to start this process of maturing and gain independence begins to take hold. At the end of the play Ibsen again emphasizes that Nora as she is now she is not the wife for Torvald or a mother to her children (Ibsen 887). She says, â€Å" Good-bye, Torvald. I won’t see the little ones. I know they are in better hands than mine. As I am now, I can be no use to them† (Ibsen 887). This, once again, a statement that women need to mature and be independent before they are ready for a family of their own. While the Indians and Africans were less technologicallyadvanced and the Europeans were uneducated, in this particular field, nothingcan compensate for the actions of the Europeans. As Europeans began to settle new lands they began their exploration ofthe foreign worlds. What they found was the opposite of what they expected. They found what they thought was a new breed of humans. In reality they werejust Native Americans. These Indians were less technologically advanced thanthe Europeans. They also worshipped different and multiple gods and atedifferent foods. Europeans saw this as barbaric, so they treated them asbarbarians. In the beginning Native Americans hadnt the faintest idea of what theEuropeans had in mind when they said trade. They figured that when the WhiteMan came and showed all that hospitality they meant it. Of course, they didnt,the Europeans captured the Indians to be used as slaves. As we watched the movie Roots, I noticed a part in the movie where theywere on a ship and a man brings in a black woman, who was a slave. The manoffered her to the ships captain and referred to her as a belly warmer. Thatgot me to thinking what could be going on in that mans head as he said that. When I heard that I was shocked that a man could treat someone like that. People have feelings and cannot be treated as objects. Maybe the Europeans didnt realize that these people were, in fact people, and that drove them to thisawful conclusion that they could treat people this way. As Europeans settled their land and began to build houses, farms andplantations, they realized that they needed servants to assist them in theirfarming. So people would travel to Africa capture blacks and then sell them tomerchants and plantation owners. They would then beat them and put them to long,grueling work. They would treat them as they did the Indians, and for much thesame reason. They figured that since the blacks were black and appeared to beless advanced then they must be less significant. People of the next generation whose parents owned slaves and grew upthinking slaves were okay is understandable. I just dont feel that anythingcould justify treating the slaves they way they did. they had absolutely norespect for them. They would savagely beat them to get them to work harder thanhumanly possible and they would rape the women. I dont think that I will everknow how any one could do such a thing. I conclusion I strongly feel that the way Europeans treated people thatwere less technologically advanced is completely and utterly wrong. Addiction to Technological Gadgets and Its Impact on Health and Lifestyle: A Study on College Students Abstract In the present era the introduction of modern technological gadgets has captured the attention of global population. The dependency of people on these technological gadgets and services provided by these has reached at such level that, without these, they can't think a step forward in the direction of their growth. The degree of dependency is leading to addiction of the tech-devices and services. Youth is the most vulnerable group among the population to be addicted to technology. The study was designed to examine the use of tech-devices by youth i.e. the time spent with the gadgets, the purposes behind use, and its impacts on mental health and life style. Using structured questionnaire, unstructured interviews and observation by the researcher, primary data were collected from 150 respondents of NIT, Rourkela. Findings of the study showed that most of the young respondents spend a large amount of their time with their tech-gadgets and services provided by them. The purposes of use i n most cases are pleasure driven rather than necessity driven. Again, it reveals that addiction to tech-devices has many negative impacts on the aspects relating to mental health of the respondents and has become a causal factor in the change of life style of young participants. The results are interpreted based on the current theories and implications for future are pointed out. Key words: Addiction, Lifestyle, Mental Health, Technological Gadgets and Services CHAPTER I Introduction The term technology comes from the Greek word "techne", which means the art or skill used in order to solve a problem, improve a pre-existing solution to a problem, achieve a goal, handle an applied input/ output relation or perform a specific function; technology is the making, modification, usage and knowledge of tools, machines, techniques and method of organisation (Liddel, Scott, Jones McKenzie, 1940). That means, it can refer to the collection of tools, including machinery, modification, arrangements and procedures. Over the last 200 years there has been a significant change in the term technology. In the 20th century i.e. during the industrial revolution the term has gained its popularity worldwide (Cradock Baldwin, 1833). Technology is the energy that acts as the driving force to drive or to run our lives. It is nothing but the results of the innovations and creativity of human beings. Germany was newly unified, and was beating the European powers in population and Industry. France wanted to recover the Alsace-Lorraine. Britain was a country used to being on the ocean, so they felt threatened by Germany's colonial expansion and William II's insisting on a large navy. Russia and Austria feared pressure on their unstable empires. In 1887 William II refused to renew the Reinsurance treaty with Russia, but continued the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. In 1894 Russia made an alliance with France, and Great Britain settled it's differences with France in the Entente Cordiale in 1904 forming the Triple Entente. The assassination, with Serbian Knowledge, of the liberal Austrian archduke Francis Ferdinan in Sarajevo in June 1914 was the spark that set off the war. Germany assured Austria full support, which resulted in an Austrian ultimatum that Serbia could not accept. Austria declared war on Serbia. Russia mobilized to defend Serbia, then Germany declared war on Russia. Germany also declared war on France. Germany wanted a quick defeat of France. To avoid the French frontier, German forces moved through neutral Belgium thinking they would take Paris by surprise. The Germans encountered more resiezce than expected in Belgium, giving France time to prepare. [Caidin 207] This violation of international law destroyed all sympathy for the Central Powers. Although German forces nearly reached Paris, the British and French Miraculously turned back the Germans at the Battle of Marne. The two sides dug trenches for a war that would last four years. The Russians then attacked sending Germany into a two front war. The Germans defeated the Russians Many times on the east, but the Allies blockaded the Germans on the east by cutting off food and raw materials, The Germans became desperate to break the blockade, so they declared unrestricted submarine warfare. [Villiers 176] After several American ships were sunk, the United States entered the war in 1917. The Russians were in the middle of several revolutions so they were not a threat to Germans. In 1918 when the Germans did not have to worry about the east, they launched an all out offensive attack in the west, but the United Allies slowly turned the tide. Realizing the situation was hopeless the German High Command urged William to let a new civil government sue for peace. Woodrow Wilson, U.S. President from 1913 to 1921, insisted on dealing with citizens. William grudgingly appointed Prince Max of Baden as chancellor. Even Though Wilson was negotiating with the chancellor there were still many problems. Fighting continued, sailors mutinied, socialist staged strikes, workers and military formed Communist councils, and revolution broke out in Bavaria. [Grolier] Prince Max announced the abdication of William II and resigned. When Germany surrendered and changed its government, it expected a negotiated peace rather than the harsh terms of the Versailles treaty of 1919. The allies were determined to receive reparations for their losses and to see that Germany was never in a position to harm them again. Germany lost the Alsace-Lorraine to France and lost West Prussia to Poland. It also lost all its colonies and had to give up most of its coal, trains, and merchant ships, as well as its navy. Germany had to limit its army and submit to Allied occupation of Rhineland for 15 years. Worst of all, the Germans had to accept full responsibility for causing the war and, consequently pay its total cost. The Germans did not consider themselves anymore guilty than anyone else and could not possibly pay all of the costs demanded. The Versailles treaty seemed fair to the Allies point of view, but it did not ensure a lasting peace. By accepting the treaty the German Government gained a bad name among its people.
